Name: Dungeons & Dragons
Release Date: 1974
Publisher: TSR, Wizards of the Coast
Current Version: 4.0
Description: Dungeons and Dragons, the father of all role playing games (RPG), was first released by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974 under the company Tactical Studies Rules, Inc (TSR). The game was acquired in 1997 and is now published under Wizards of the Coast.
Dungeons & Dragons is led by one person who acts as the Dungeon Master (or Game Master), controlling all non-player actions in the game (world events, creature movement and behavior, weather, etc). Any number of players can play the game, each typically controlling one character in the imaginary world. Since the game is paper based (and sometimes played with miniatures), only the player's imaginations are the limit. Polyhedral dice are used to determine success or failure of player actions.
Dungeons & Dragons has released the following versions:
- Dungeons & Dragons - Red Box (first edition)
- Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (second edition)
- Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition (3E and 3.5E)
- Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition
